The Public Works PWSA and PWMI Certificates offer comprehensive training in public works supervision and management. The certificate courses are practical, taught by experienced instructors, and provide an opportunity to network and learn from other public works supervisors, managers, and instructors.

PWSA: Complete 9 courses (54 classroom hours)

PWMI: Complete 14 courses (90 classroom hours)

Average completion: two years.

Initial Cost: $100 to sign up and receive two textbooks that will be referenced during your courses.

PWMI: $2,555

No academic experience is required to enroll.

Public Works Management Institute Capstone course

After you’ve notified us that you have completed 14 courses and we’ve verified completion, you will be invited to the Capstone course. The PWMI certificate will be presented to you at this course.

The certificate program registration fee is $100. This fee includes two textbooks for use during the series of courses.

  • Public Works Administration: Supervision and Management

Estimated total certificate program cost:

PWSA: $1705 for nine courses (54 classroom hours)

PWMI: $2555 for 14 courses (90 classroom hours)

Program participants register for each course separately and pay the course fee for each course. Certificate courses do not need to be taken in a specific sequence, except that the PWMI Capstone must be taken last in the PWMI certificate program. The average completion time is two years.

Public Works Supervisory Academy (PWSA)

Once you’ve successfully complete the required courses for the PWSA certificate, email us your completed certificate worksheet. Once we have verified that you have completed all certificate courses we will send you your PWSA Certificate.

Public Works Management Institute (PWMI)

The PWMI certificate is one of 19 APWA approved institutes nationally, requiring 90 hours of training. Read this additional information about the APWA Institute. Once you’ve successfully completed 14 certificate program courses, email us your completed certificate worksheet. After we’ve verified completion, you will be invited to the Capstone course. The PWMI certificate will be presented to you at this course.

Our Public Works PWSA and PWMI Certificates are offered in collaboration with the Wisconsin Chapter American Public Works Association (APWA). The PWMI certificate is one of 19 APWA approved institutes nationally, and requires the full 90 hours of training.

Public Works PWSA and PWMI courses may also fulfill some elective requirements of the Certified Public Manager certificate program offered by the UW-Madison Division of Extension, Local Government Education. Contact Extension Local Government Education for more information.
