The UW–Madison College of Engineering Master of Science in Engineering Management (MEM) program is proud to recognize the recipients of the Summer Wayne Pferdehirt Memorial Scholarship. Established in honor of Wayne Pferdehirt’s enduring legacy as an educator, mentor, and advocate for professional development, the scholarship supports students who exemplify his commitment to leadership, service, and lifelong learning in their workplaces and communities.
This semester’s scholarship has been awarded to three MEM students: Nikesh Chawla along with repeat recipients Ryan Gitzke and Justin Wolfram.

Chawla emphasized the importance of leadership, service, and community impact as he reflected on receiving the award and the legacy it represents. “I am deeply honored to receive this award and humbled to be associated with Wayne Pferdehirt’s legacy of bridging technical skill with genuine human connection. This recognition reinforces my belief that engineering leadership is about more than just the output; it’s about lifting others, investing in community, and leaving every situation better than you found it. I will carry this award as both a privilege and a responsibility as I continue to lead my team at USEMCO and serve the Tomah community.”

Gitzke reflected on the immediate impact the scholarship has had on his professional development and communication skills. He has already seen the impact of the scholarship on his professional growth. The award helped support coursework that strengthened his technical communication, proposal writing, and presentation skills, enabling him to communicate more effectively and confidently in the workplace.

Wolfram is pursuing his degree with aspirations to lead new product development projects and multidisciplinary engineering teams. He hopes to extend the impact of his education through active involvement with the American Welding Society Fox Valley Section, applying his learning through service, mentorship, and leadership to support both the engineering profession and the broader technical community.
The Wayne Pferdehirt Memorial Scholarship celebrates students who combine academic achievement with a dedication to supporting and inspiring others. This semester’s recipients embody the values Wayne championed throughout his career, carrying forward his legacy through leadership, mentorship, and service.
