The UW–Madison College of Engineering Master of Science in Engineering Management (MEM) program is proud to recognize the recipients of the Fall 2026 Wayne Pferdehirt Memorial Scholarship. Established in honor of Wayne Pferdehirt’s enduring legacy as an educator, mentor, and advocate for professional development, the scholarship supports students who exemplify his commitment to leadership, service, and lifelong learning in their workplaces and communities.
This semester’s scholarship has been awarded to three recipients whose continued leadership, academic excellence, and commitment to serving others reflect the values Wayne championed throughout his career: Ryan Gitzke, Nikesh Chawla, and Lexi Bogalhas.
For Gitzke, receiving the scholarship is about more than financial support. It is an opportunity to continue growing as an engineer and give back to others. “Receiving this scholarship is an incredible honor. With the support of this scholarship and the education I am gaining, I hope to make a positive impact in both the engineering field as well as the Madison community by mentoring and guiding other engineers in their careers, sharing knowledge, and helping create opportunities for others to grow and succeed.”
As an engineering manager, Chawla sees mentorship as an important part of leadership—one that extends beyond the workplace. “I feel a real responsibility to help my engineers grow, not just at work but in their broader futures, and that same spirit draws me to volunteer with local fundraising efforts. Wayne’s legacy of mentorship, service, and engineering excellence reflects values I try to live by every day. I am honored to receive this award and grateful for your continued support of my graduate studies.”
Receiving the scholarship has reinforced Bogalhas’s commitment to giving back through mentorship and education. They view the award as a reminder of the lasting impact that teaching and community involvement can have on others.
