Using Computer Simulation in Mechanical Engineering – Part 1

In this TechTalk@UWEPD, Dan Negrut, professor in the UW-Madison Mechanical Engineering Department, covers how computer modeling and simulation can be used to help engineers make better products. He breaks down the four ingredients necessary in the process: the idea of equations of motion, or how the laws of physics are used to generate a model; the idea of “numerical method, or algorithm,” which is employed to solve the equations associated with the model; the idea that software needs to be generated to implement the algorithm so that the latter can be executed on a computer; and the idea of leveraging advanced hardware and reliance on parallel computers to carry out simulations that the engineers use to gain design insights.
