Where should I start?

Many professionals begin with the Qualified Commissioning Process Provider (QCxP) certification, which establishes core knowledge of the commissioning process.

Do I need prior experience?

No. The core certifications focus on knowledge and do not require prior project experience or a degree.

How do the certifications differ?

Each certification focuses on a different area: foundational commissioning process (QCxP), existing buildings (EBCxP), or building enclosures (BECxP and CxA+BE).

Do I need to take courses before the exam?

Yes. Each certification requires completion of specific courses before taking the exam.

How long is the certification valid?

All UW-Madison Commissioning certifications are valid for a period of five years. The purpose of expiration dates is to provide a process to verify that individuals holding UW–Madison Commissioning certifications remain actively engaged and knowledgeable about the current implementation and guidelines of the Commissioning Process.

How do I renew my certification?

Renewal emails and/or letters will be sent during January or early February for any individual whose certificate expires during that calendar year.

The renewal process requires 4 steps. These are shown on the renewal email or letter and summarized below:

  1. Log into the renewal website shown on the email/letter
  2. Pay the renewal fee (if required – see fee schedule)
  3. Update your contact information and complete the online survey
  4. Complete the online recertification educational quiz (17-20 multiple-choice questions)

After these steps are complete, a new certificate with the updated expiration date will be sent to the updated email address indicated.

Advance Your Certification

After earning Qualified Commissioning Process Provider (QCxP) Certificate, you can pursue advanced certifications based on your role and experience. These certifications require project experience and build on the QCxP foundation. CxAP – Accredited Commissioning Process Authority Professional (also CAP)

Acknowledges applicants who have served as the primary commissioning authority during all project stages (pre-design through occupancy) on a minimum number and size of projects.

CxM – Accredited Commissioning Process Manager

Distinguishes applicants who have managed commissioning process activities within their organizations, such as university, utility, or government programs.

CxTS – Accredited Commissioning Process Technical Service Provider (also CTS)

Highlights the skill and experience of applicants who have provided commissioning services primarily in select project stages, on small or limited scope projects, or who provide key technical support to commissioning activities.

GCxP – Accredited Green Commissioning Process Provider (also GCP)

Recognizes individuals who lead the commissioning process activities as commissioning authorities (the CxP team leader) on new or existing building projects that emphasize green and sustainable building principles.
