Course Overview
Digital Control for Power Converters is a 4-day, 24-PDH advanced professional development course delivered live online in HyFlex format. Participants develop mastery of digital control theory and implementation for power converters, including DC-DC converters, three-phase inverters, and motor drives. The curriculum progresses from analog-to-digital control migration, through discrete-time modeling and z-domain compensator design, to embedded fixed-point implementation and hardware-in-the-loop validation. Each session integrates MATLAB/Simulink live demonstrations and Qspice simulation exercises. The course serves as an advanced elective in the Electrified Systems Certificate and is the direct continuation of Intermediate Power Electronics.
Who Should Attend
- Electrical engineers and embedded software engineers with 3+ years of experience in power electronics design who have completed RA00072 Intermediate Power Electronics or equivalent
- Practicing engineers at automotive OEMs, Tier 1 suppliers, energy storage and renewable energy companies, industrial drives manufacturers, and data center power systems companies
- Engineering managers and technical leads overseeing digital power conversion system design
- Engineers transitioning from analog to digital DSP/microcontroller-based control implementations
Learning Outcomes
- Design discrete-time digital compensators (PI, lead-lag, state-space) for DC-DC converters and three-phase inverters using z-domain analysis and MATLAB/Simulink.
- Implement fixed-point digital control algorithms on microcontrollers and DSPs.
- Discuss concepts including anti-windup, dead-time compensation, and PWM interrupt-driven control loops.
- Apply digital control techniques to closed-loop power converters systems including voltage-mode control, control, average-current-mode control, and field-oriented control for motor drives, validated through simulation and HIL testing.
