Certification Requirements

To earn the Existing Building Commissioning Process Provider (EBCxP) certification, you must complete the required courses and pass the certification exam.

    Covers process phases, terminology, benefits, and strategies based on ASHRAE Guideline 0.2

About the Certificate

Do I need prior commissioning experience?

No. The certification focuses on knowledge and exam performance, not prior project experience.

Why is HVAC included in this certification?

Understanding HVAC systems is critical to diagnosing and improving performance in existing buildings. The certification includes HVAC fundamentals to support effective commissioning.

Can I take the courses in any order.

Yes, however, both required courses must be completed before taking the certification exam.

How long is the certification valid?

All UW-Madison Commissioning certifications are valid for a period of five years. The purpose of expiration dates is to provide a process to verify that individuals holding UW–Madison Commissioning certifications remain actively engaged and knowledgeable about the current implementation and guidelines of the Commissioning Process.

How do I renew my certification?

Renewal emails and/or letters will be sent during January or early February for any individual whose certificate expires during that calendar year.

The renewal process requires 4 steps. These are shown on the renewal email or letter and summarized below:

  1. Log into the renewal website shown on the email/letter
  2. Pay the renewal fee (if required – see fee schedule)
  3. Update your contact information and complete the online survey
  4. Complete the online recertification educational quiz (17-20 multiple-choice questions)

After these steps are complete, a new certificate with the updated expiration date will be sent to the updated email address indicated.
