Tyson Foods Leads with Process Safety Management Professionals

Six professionals from Tyson Foods’ Corporate PSM team recently earned their Process Safety Management Professional (PSMP) credentials. This milestone reflects Tyson’s continued investment in safety excellence and professional development.

Offered jointly by the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Interdisciplinary Professional Programs and the Industrial Refrigeration Consortium (IRC), the PSMP supports professionals involved with Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) programs, solidifying their knowledge and skills to be effective in the development and continuous improvement of these safety programs.  Unique to the industry, the UW’s PSMP is focused on ammonia refrigeration systems and the related industry standards that apply to the technology.

“The PSMP grew out of seeing organizations appoint staff to a ‘PSM Coordinator’ or ‘PSM Manager’ role and expecting their success without any sort of training or development” said Douglas Reindl, Director of the IRC and PSMP program.  “An underlying goal of the PSMP is to provide foundational skills for those serving in these roles so they can be successful in developing, implementing, and continuously improving PSM/RMP programs for ammonia refrigerated facilities.

The Tyson professionals participating in the PSMP were not of this usual mold however – all of them had considerable experience in PSM/RMP and refrigeration prior to entering the program.  Their participation in the program allowed each of them to further hone their skills individually and collectively in a number of areas to enable them to better support plant personnel” said Reindl.

“A certification is more than just a piece of paper — it represents perseverance, growth, and a commitment to excellence,” said Adrienne Allison, CSP, Director Safety, Regulatory & Compliance, Tyson Foods. “I’m proud of what this team has achieved with this milestone and how they continue to raise the bar for our industry.”

Reindl concluded: “I very much appreciate the trust and commitment that Tyson Foods made in supporting their safety professionals to pursue and successfully complete their PSMP.  I am looking forward to the great things they will do within Tyson and through their service to the industry moving forward in time.”
