Workshop Overview

In this two-day course, you will focus on managing the range of services and operational issues in a public works department. Students will give a presentation on a topic of their choice.

Additional Information

Meet certificate requirements with new option
Complete either Municipal Engineering Fundamentals for Non-Engineers or Fundamentals of Public Works Operations to meet the requirements for the Public Works Management Institute certificate.

Notes
The primary course resource is the APWA blue book Public Works Administration: Operations and is included in the course registration fee. The blue book is a comprehensive and up-to-date resource that students will find useful in the other PWSA/PWMI courses, at work and as they prepare for career advancement or tackling new responsibilities.

Workshop Outline

The focus of this two-day course is on the management of the most commonly found and important operating departments, divisions, and tasks in a comprehensive public works agency, no matter the size of the agency.

Topics include:

  • Street Management and Transportation Planning
  • Right-of-way Management, including utility coordination and one call services
  • Drinking Water Production, Treatment, and Distribution
  • Wastewater Collection, Treatment, and Disposal
  • Stormwater Management: Quality and Quantity
  • Engineering and Capital Improvements
  • Solid waste and recycling collection and disposal
  • Emergency management planning and operations
  • Facilities and grounds maintenance
  • Equipment and fleet management

Instructors

Benjamin Jordan

Benjamin J. Jordan, PE is a program director with Interdisciplinary Professional Programs in the transportation sector. He has over 35 years of experience in civil engineering and public works. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign and a Master of Public Affairs degree with a Certificate in Public Management from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a Licensed Professional Engineer in the State of Illinois.
