Course Overview
Applied Leadership for Performance Culture defines the specific framework required to help prepare and implement a high-performance-culture, as well as the specific leadership skills and behaviors required to evolve and sustain the culture.
In this 3-day course you will learn ‘Hoshin Planning’, a process that uses strategic steps and tools to implement and perpetuate a continuous improvement strategy and culture across an organization. This course includes two full days of active practice teach-backs of people-skill-building modules which include facilitation skills, questioning skills, handling conflict, holding others accountable, setting expectations, giving and receiving feedback, and building trust.
Students will:
- Learn the Hoshin Planning process.
- Learn the leadership skills and behaviors essential to implement a high-performance culture.
- Practice demonstrating the skills to implement, evolve and sustain a high-performance work culture.
- Prepare students to implement and sustain a high-performance culture.
- Learn skills to move from authoritarian or directive management style, to a transformative or coaching leadership style.
Upon completion of each teach-back assignment, feedback and coaching will be provided by co-instructors of the course. As the course advances, students are given the opportunity to provide feedback and coaching as they see and learn from co-instructors.

Amanda Renz
Amanda Renz is a Learning Design Manager with the University of Wisconsin–Madison’s Interdisciplinary Professional Programs. She leads a team who supports the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of graduate and professional development programs, along with the exploration and integration of educational technology to enhance the learning experience. As a Certified Product Owner and ScrumMaster, Amanda applies an Agile framework to lead teams and strategic efforts that transform systems and develop innovative solutions to complex problems.
Amanda is a proud Badger and life-long learner. She earned her BS in Education and MS in Library and Information Studies, both at UW–Madison. Amanda brings over ten years of classroom teaching, training, and facilitation experience as well as ten years of experience in a US Army combat training brigade. She enjoys yoga, biking, and paddleboarding.
Jon Wellik
Jon Wellik is the Program Director for the Maintenance and Reliability Management and Technical Leadership professional development programs, offered by Interdisciplinary Professional Programs at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Jon has more than 30 years of food and beverage field manufacturing experience, including plant startup operations at Frito-Lay where he was recipient of two national quality awards, the second as Plant Manager. Other companies include Kraft Foods, PepsiCo, Dairy Farmers of America, Morgan Foods, and Ab E Manufacturing, in roles as first line Supervisor, Plant Manager (3), Director in Continuous Improvement (2), VP Operations, and President/CEO. His career of varied experiences fostered multiple company transformations by way of strategic deployment, product and equipment innovation, and curriculum development and deployment.
Jon's education includes a BS in Agricultural Business from Iowa State University and an Executive MBA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a Master Trainer in Continuous Improvement and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt. Jon is a volunteer with RSVP-Madison and enjoys yoga, golf, and travel.
