Course Overview

This course will provide an introduction of typical light rail and commuter rail traction power systems. A great introduction for those new to the topic and also for those who will be taking the full 2-day Fundamentals of Traction Power Systems and Overhead Contact Systems course.

This is a recorded on-demand on-line course.

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Understand the difference between both traction power systems and overhead contact systems.
  • Identify basic equipment and purpose
  • Understand power feeding schemes and operational considerations
  • Understand the pantograph’s interface to the OCS
  • Understand the basic OCS configurations, styles and functions
  • Identify the various types of supporting structures and purpose
  • Identify the basic OCS parts, equipment and assemblies
  • Understand the differences between DC and AC OCS components

Who Should Attend?

If you are new to work in this area or need to understand the concepts related to electrically-powered rail systems, this is the course for you! The course is a free-standing course for those who need an overview of the topic. It is highly encouraged you take this course before the 2-day “Fundamentals” course.

Moises Ramos

Moises Ramos, PE, is a Senior Electrification Engineer with HDR in Denver, CO. With over 15 years of specialized experience in design, construction, inspection, testing and commissioning of electrified railroads Moises brings his unique expertise on overhead contact systems and traction power systems to his clients. He has provided system’s engineering services for RTD-Denver, Amtrak, Long Island Railroad, SEPTA, MBTA, LA Metro and DART. He is experienced in construction estimating, complex construction staging and constructability logistics.
