MEES Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Emily Bierman, P.E.

Dr. Emily Bierman, P.E. is a MEES graduate and started teaching classes in MEES in the Engine Design sequence in 2016.

She recently re-joined John Deere as a Senior Engineer in the Turf and Compact Utility Division, working in the powertrain group on engines and transmissions. She is working to help Deere find green solutions.

Dr. Bierman received her BS in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue and then joined the Construction and Forestry Division at John Deere. During this time she pursued a MBA at Clarke College. Working on excavators ignited her passion for engines and lead her to the MEES program. While a student in the program, she moved to the Power Systems divisions to work on engine calibrations for Ag equipment. After completing her MEES degree, she took a leave of absence from John Deere to work on her PhD, at North Carolina State University.

She then joined Cummins in Charleston, SC to work on high horsepower engine calibrations for the Marine group. Dr. Bierman made a career shift after Cummins and became a tenure track professor at The Citadel Military College. She taught in the Mechanical Engineering department in the power and energy discipline. She developed and taught an internal combustion engines class and a renewable energy class. She was awarded a fellowship from Office of Naval Research and spent this past summer at Port Hueneme, CA where she was studying hydrogen for use as an alternative fuel. This year she got her professional engineering license in the state of South Carolina.
